Bindu Selected as Fellow of GES

It is with delight that we note that Bindu Ananth, President, IFMR Trust, was recently selected as a Fellow of the Global Economic Symposium (GES). She shares her experience:

GES Fellows are people under the age of 35 and doing path-breaking work in economics and economic development. The symposium was held at the beautiful Plon Castle in Germany. There were nine other Fellows, all fantastic people drawn from the European Union, Deutsche Bank, OECD, UAE Govt, NYU, Stanford and others.

As a Fellow, we had an opportunity to listen and respond to some amazing speakers including Prof. Shiller (of the irrational exuberance fame), Prof. Akerlof, the Turkish finance minister and the Governor of the Central Bank of Germany. Lots of financial crisis post-mortem.

GES is a “solutions focused platform”, so the solutions proposed ranged from higher capital adequacy standards for banks to need for a systemic risk regulator to introduction of new hybrid capital instruments (debt that converts to equity when defined events occur) for financial institutions. Not as much focus on access to finance issues, as I would have liked. We were asked to do an elevator pitch on some of the interesting projects we were involved in professionally and our Network Enterprises Fund was unanimously voted as the best idea at my table because of its focus on eliminating information barriers in various markets.
